Why raves need diversity (with HE.SHE.THEY)
When you trace the history of dance music culture back to its roots, diversity is one of the core elements. Minorities, who were on the fringes of society, gathered in secret to party and connect with one another. Since then, dance music has steadily become more homogeneous.
@he.she.they are on the frontline for positive change and, by their own admission, in a constant state of learning, while working towards making everyone feel welcome on the dance floor. Here one of their founders @sophia_kearney tells us why raves need inclusivity.
VEHICLE FOR SOCIAL CHANGE
“When people feel part of something bigger than themselves, it can be a potent catalyst for social change. The realisation that “I am powerful” can spark positive action or protest, and give people the confidence to assert themselves. This can quickly lead to making genuine change in their own lives and wider society.”
INCLUSIVE SPACES
“Whether you identify under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella, or you’re a person of colour, curvier body shape, different level of ability, some clubs and festival spaces can feel unwelcoming. When there’s diversity in the people on stage, the club staff and security and everyone else on the dance floor the entire space feels more welcoming. Raves thrive on consideration for their attendees.”
EMPOWERMENT
“Underrepresented people can often feel like they have no influence. Seeing a diverse group of people on stage having the adulation of the crowd can elicit a deep sense of empowerment. When everyone feels represented, they lose their inhibitions and express themselves freely. This creates an unparalleled energy on the dance floor.”
COUNTER TO HOMOGENY
“Money has cultivated a large degree of disparity, which has taken us away from the roots of the culture. If our industry does what it can to make these experiences affordable to everyone, we bring back the original essence and offer a counter to homogeneity.”
