Why music strengthens social bonds
So many of you will relate to this; going to a festival or party in a far away place, or even your local club, and forming close bonds with people you’ve never met. Or perhaps deepening your connection with your existing crew.
There are countless stories of this happening throughout the history of rave culture. It’s a very common occurrence. But what has music got to do with this?...
MUSIC STIMULATES HAPPY HORMONES
Good old oxytocin and endorphins are among the hormones released while you’re partying. Oxytocin, known as the “love hormone”, is especially critical in the formation and maintenance of social bonds. Endorphins help to bond entire groups. Happiness all round.
MUSIC CAN CULTIVATE TOGETHERNESS
Being on the dance floor surrounded by hundreds, or thousands, of people all dancing to the same rhythm creates a strong feeling of togetherness. That shared experience, and synchronised movement, is key for deepening bonds with others.
A SENSE OF BELONGING
When you’re all together on the dance floor, it awakens that ancient part of us. Partying together, celebrating life, singing, dancing… it’s inherent to humanity’s need for social cohesion. You like the same music, you might dress the same and go to the same events. Being at a rave can lead to truly finding your people.
MUSIC STIMULATES CONNECTION
Music is often made to be enjoyed communally. In a social setting it can trigger connections between like minded people; conversations, stories, shared histories and experiences. All of which can facilitate strong bonds between people.
