Why DJs prefer small clubs
Ever since dance music culture first transcended the clubs where it was first conceived, the audiences, and stages, have got larger and larger.
Today, a variety of festivals and super-sized clubs all over the world regularly host huge events. But many DJs feel disconnected from the crowd when they’re elevated on a huge stage. Here’s why some DJs prefer small clubs…
INTIMACY
In smaller clubs there’s a level of intimacy that the big stage simply cannot match up to. A small club can have the feel of a house party; a private space where everyone knows each other. Perfect for a scintillating DJ set.
CONNECTION
When playing smaller clubs DJs can actually interact with the crowd a lot more. From eye contact to maybe even having a brief chat, that level of connection adds a whole other layer of depth to the night.
SOUND
With the right soundsystem and acoustics, a small club is unrivalled when it comes to sound. When you’re boxed in, with low ceilings, the potency and impact of the music is immersive, intense and unparalleled.
ENERGY
Similarly, being contained within a smaller space means the energy of the crowd is unified, concentrated and almost tangible. A special kind of energetic magic occurs when a few hundred people are all expressing themselves freely in a small, dark, sweaty box.
