Why AI will never fully conquer music
The integration of AI could be the biggest transition humanity has ever gone through. For many people it’s sparking fear and anxiety, while others are implementing it with open arms.
In the music industry, there are already reports about AI-generated music flooding streaming platforms. The potential for humans to utilise it as a tool to achieve more creative output is one of the many positives. Here’s a look at why AI will never fully conquer music…
MAKING MUSIC IS COMPLEX
Human creativity is not as simple as digesting a tonne of data, finding patterns and regurgitating them. Making music is informed by a vast, complex web of inspiration and experience, often not even understood by the composer themselves. AI has the potential to elevate human expression, if used in the right way.
AI IS A TOOL FOR PROGRESS
AI can be a great tool for augmenting the creative process. It could well make “better”, more perfect music than us, or generate more expansive ideas - but, ultimately, it’s human input that will take things to an even greater level. A combination of human and AI presents a whole new field of possibility.
EMOTION ISN’T ALWAYS PERFECT
Whether it’s a simple jump up DnB tune or a complicated classical composition, at the foundation of most music is the human emotion behind it. This is what other humans connect with. Sometimes, the imperfection of human creativity is what gives music its character and emotional impact.
HUMANS CONNECT WITH LIVING BEINGS
There’s something almost primitive within us that resonates with the natural expression of another living being. Whether it’s birdsong or the strum of a guitar, or a soulful melody played from the heart, these vibrations activate something deep within us. Incorporating AI into the music making process, could open up new avenues to channel these vibrations.
