Why 90s tunes are timelessly uplifting (with Belters4U)
Whether you grew up in the nineties, or you were born after that golden era, there’s a distinct feeling in the music that still resonates with many of you today. So many 90s bangers find their way into DJ sets today, and smash dance floors.
Alan Gillies heads up @belters4U, a page dedicated to showcasing the very best of the nineties; from trance and progressive, to house and techno. Here he explains why 90s tunes are still bangers today…
COUNTER TO A NEGATIVE WORLD
The world we live in can be troubling at times. There’s a sense of hope and optimism that runs through a lot of 90s tunes, and this nostalgia can provide a great counter to the difficulties we face today.
IT WAS STILL SO FRESH IN THE 90s
In the 90s, dance music culture was still in its infancy. Artists were experimenting and looking to the future for inspiration. The DJs, producers and ravers were driven by utopian ideals: - togetherness and freedom. You can feel this in the music, the euphoria and the positive energy.
TRIGGERS HAPPY MEMORIES
For those who lived through the nineties, hearing those tunes again can be a trigger to positive memories. Even if they’re sampled and repurposed, vocals or melodies can take people back to a happy time in their lives.
TIMELESSNESS
The core themes of freedom, hope, love and euphoria that are often present in nineties tunes are timeless. There’s a beauty and real sense of humanity in a lot of those tunes; the vocals and the analogue equipment they used. This is why they resonate with people who weren’t even alive back then.
