How to host a pro-level house party
House parties are sometimes better than clubs or festivals. There is, of course, a certain level of hedonism that only really occurs when you’re partying within the confines of someone’s private abode.
But there’s also an intimacy and freedom that comes with having a rave at home. That said, some party hosts fail to cover all the bases, which can lead to a total flop. Here are some tips for hosting a pro-level house party…
WARN THE NEIGHBOURS
This is an absolute priority. The very last thing you want is one of your neighbours calling the Old Bill and your party getting shut down before it’s even kicked off. Worse still, someone getting arrested for having bits on them… Think ahead and spread the word around your local area.
KEEP IT CONTAINED
There are a few reasons why you want to make sure some rooms are off limits. Number one, the energy of the party can become fragmented if everyone’s cracking on in different rooms. Secondly, you’ll have a much bigger job tidying up if the whole house gets trashed.
TELL EVERYONE TO BRING DRINKS
If you make yourself solely responsible for supplying drinks, you’ll end up spending a lot of money and it will fall on you if the booze runs out. Bring a bottle (or two) is an essential instruction for all attendees.
MUSIC IS EVERYTHING
While you probably won’t need a festival-sized Funktion-One setup, having a decent set of speakers and a few DJs, or a strong playlist, are the foundation of a great house party. If the sound and/or music are pants, people will leave.
FENG SHUI THE SPACE
You may not need to be as meticulous as the Chinese art of harmonising a living space, but thinking about creating a good balance through the house is a crucial aspect of a successful house party.
You’ll need a dance floor (or stand up and chat space), chill out spots and areas where people can smoke or have a crack-on.
KEEP THE LOO SMELLING FRESH
Buy a large scented candle and make sure there’s a good air freshener on hand, plus plenty of bog roll. Once people start getting in amongst it, you’ll be thankful for this tip.
