How to deal with peer pressure like a pro
Peer pressure is inherent to human behaviour. As social creatures we have a need to fit in, to maintain order in the pack and have some semblance of conformity.
The result of this is pressure from others to join in with what everyone else is doing. Useful in some cases, but, of course, sometimes the pressure leads to behaviour that is out of character or harmful to the individual.
Peer pressure can be very insidious, persuasive and difficult to combat, so here are a few tips if you’re struggling to stay strong.
STICK TO YOUR VALUES
Take some time to reflect about your values. What is it that drives you and motivates you? How can you maintain those values? Learning about yourself and resolving to protect your values are key assets in dealing with peer pressure.
NO MEANS NO
Use the word “No” as a force field that will deflect all peer pressure. Be steadfast and resolute. Remember, you are an individual and you do not have to do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing. And it really doesn’t matter if everyone else is doing it. A polite “No thanks, I don’t want to”, should be all you need.
BE DIRECT
When confronted with peer pressure it can sometimes leave you a little indecisive. The inner battle between what you want and what you think you “should” do can be torturous. So, instead, stand firm and be direct. No deliberation, keep it to the point. “I’m not interested, thanks”. No need to explain.
WALK AWAY
If you’re really struggling under pressure, then take yourself out of the situation altogether. The longer you waver, the higher the chance of you buckling. Simply step away, leave the club if you have to. It’s better to call it a night and stay true to yourself, than get pulled into an uncomfortable situation.
FIND YOUR CREW
Spending time with people who will respect your boundaries, and not try to pressure you into doing things you don’t want to, is paramount. Surround yourself with positive influences and you’ll rarely have to deal with peer pressure.
