Festival camping: Basic vs boutique

When it comes to the festival experience, one of the most divisive aspects is camping. Some people get on with it and accept that the rigours of camping are part of the whole deal. Meanwhile, others need to make it as comfortable as possible. And some simply never camp.

Looking at the offerings at most events, there are two main options – basic or boutique. Basic can mean lack of sleep, comfort and peace, while you’ll mostly get the opposite in boutique. Here are some points to consider…

YOUR BUDGET
Of course, getting a boutique camping spot means paying a lot more money. Often the tents (typically bell tents) will be pre-erected and furnished, saving time and effort. If you can afford it, it can be a game changer. But equally, if you choose a lower-priced option, you can splash that cash on fun elsewhere.

HYGIENE & CLEANLINESS
Basic camping has a lot of people who aren’t that fussed about cleanliness. It’s not uncommon to be faced with piles of empty beer cans and other rubbish. And the showers – if you’re lucky to have any – are busier. Pack some wet wipes.

THE “REAL” FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE
Some say that it’s not a real festival experience without camping the “proper” way. It adds a certain edge to the festival when you’re doing it the hard way, and having to work for all the fun you have is more satisfying. It certainly separates the fair-weather festival heads from the diehards.

COMFORT
When you camp in basic, your comfort is in your own hands. No one seems to have invented blow-up mattresses that last more than a day without deflating. You’re often closer to the action, so it’s easier to pop back to your tent. That said, a boutique tent with a half-decent mattress or double bed is pretty appealing.

COMMUNITY
When you’re “slumming it” in basic camping, there’s more opportunity to befriend your neighbours and experience the communal side of a festival. Everyone is on top of each other and has a common grin-and-bear-it camaraderie. It’s hard not to end up with a whole new crew of comrades.
