5 ways you can support aspiring artists

Trying to make your way in the music industry can be tough and thankless. In dance music it can be even harder, especially because the space for artists has become so saturated.

Many of you will know someone who is an aspiring artist, whether they’re a fledgling DJ or wannabe producer. But even if you don’t know them personally, here are five ways you can support up and coming artists…

BUY THEIR MUSIC
Oh so simple, but oh so neglected, buying someone’s music is a surefire way to really put your money where your mouth is. Similarly, paying for tickets to see them perform is also critical for many aspiring artists. If the artist is your friend, buy double the amount and never ask for freebies… save that for when they’re famous.

FOLLOW THEM ON SOCIAL MEDIA
In an age where follower counts can make all the difference with bookings and record deals, following your favourite up and coming artists on all their platforms is a no-brainer. Share their music on your own socials, post content from their gigs and become a fully-fledged volunteer member of their social media marketing team.

TELL EVERYONE ABOUT THEM
Harness the power of recommendation, beyond simply posting on social media. Speaking to your friends about the lesser known artists you love can cultivate curiosity, or even get them following your faves right away.

WEAR THEIR MERCH
Most artists will be well-versed in marketing and building their brand, so if they’re releasing their own merch, then snap it up and show it off as much as you can. You never know how many people will inquire about that logo tee you’re wearing, and how many new fans it will create for the artist.

GO OLD SCHOOL
If you’ve never called into a radio station and made a request before, then consider doing it. Radio exposure still has a far-reaching impact on artists’ careers. You can also lobby local venues and music festivals to book your favourite act. The more you get behind them, the more likely they are to succeed.
