5 ways to help a friend who's overdoing it
The party life has many pitfalls. Many ravers lose themselves in a lifestyle that can become toxic and very unhealthy. Whether that’s addiction, depression, or any number of other harmful behaviours.
For this reason, it is imperative that we keep a close eye on our friends. If you notice a mate overdoing it on a regular basis, here are a few ways you can help them.
BE A SAFE PRESENCE
Simply being there for someone, as a non-judgmental presence, can be enough for them to start opening up. Building a strong level of trust is key to broaching the subject of substance abuse. Just tell them, “I’ve noticed you’re getting on it a lot, I’m here if you ever need support.”
SPEAK UP
If they don’t come to you, the next step is to suggest meeting up so you can speak to your friend about your concerns. Approach them in a friendly, non-critical manner. Ensure you are both sober and in a private space before bringing it up, as these types of discussions require sensitivity and a clear head.
BE POSITIVE BUT REAL
Avoid criticism and judgement, leaning more into explaining what you like about your friend when they’re sober, or how their behaviour changes after getting on it. At the same time though, maintaining firm boundaries is essential, so avoid being around them if you know they’ll be cracking on.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
It’s rarely spoken about but helping a friend with an addiction is very hard going at times. So, make sure you’re taking care of yourself to ensure you’re physically and mentally capable of dealing with what is an often very challenging experience.
JOIN SUPPORT GROUPS
On that note, it’s worth doing a search online for support groups for people who have friends, or relatives, who are abusing substances. Being amongst others who have similar issues, and may be further down the path of recovery and rehabilitation, can be a very therapeutic experience, and can help your mate through their issues.
