Why we need more mystery in rave culture
In today’s hyperconnected and digitally-driven world, you can watch moments from a long list of raves and festivals by jumping onto some well-known apps. You can see what your favourite DJ had for breakfast, or what Ibiza’s opening parties were like.
Even so-called underground events often have filmographers on site to generate content for their socials. There isn’t a lot of mystery anymore. Here’s why we need more of it…
IT PROMOTES CURIOSITY
Not knowing sparks your curious side, and, once curious, humans need to embark on a voyage of discovery. There’s power in that desire to venture into the unknown and seek out what we don’t yet know.
ENCOURAGES EXCITEMENT
Stepping into the unknown and doing something novel encourages a heady mix of fear and excitement. That excited feeling feeds into the rave, creating an exhilarating atmosphere. Also, on the other side of fear you’ll often find growth and joy.
LIBERATED SELF-EXPRESSION
Before it started to be documented consistently, rave culture didn’t really have a template, which meant people were less likely to conform. When you watch footage of raves online, subconsciously you might start to form an idea what raves “should be like”.
SPARKS YOUR IMAGINATION
When you don’t know what to expect, your mind can start to imagine how things will be. This can boost your excitement even more. The prospect of experiencing something you’ve never seen or heard before can be incredibly alluring.
MYSTERY IS A SOURCE OF FASCINATION
Fascination occurs when our attention is involuntarily captured by an environment. Like curiosity, it’s a powerful experience that can have positive benefits; bringing us into the present moment and stimulating positive emotions.
