Why queer rave spaces are so important (with Body Movements)
At the beginning of dance music culture as we know it today, many of the earliest events were created by people on the margins of then-society. Gay and ethnic minorities, who didn’t have safe spaces to congregate, created their own.
Although things are starting to change, the necessity for similar safe spaces still remains today. Clayton Wright is the Creative Director of @bodymovementsfestival and co-founder of @littlegaybro and @feelitparty, here he explains why queer safe spaces are still important.
IT’S POLITICAL
In an age where homophobia, transphobia and attacks on the queer/LGBTQ+ community are still prevalent, it’s a political statement to come together and celebrate our existence. It’s an act of resistance. Our collective joy shows that we are unapologetic and unafraid, and this act of hope fuels change for a brighter future.
QUEER COMMUNITY PAVED THE WAY
Queer people are discerning tastemakers that have incredible taste in music. Looking at the history and the roots of house and dance music, it comes from both black and queer communities. That needs to be recognised and celebrated with our music, for our people, in our space.
PARTY WITHOUT PREJUDICE
In queer spaces, we can see ourselves and explore our identity and our sexuality, without prejudice from other people. It’s liberating to be able to exist in a space free from judging eyes, and without having to look over our shoulders.
SAFETY & FREEDOM
You don’t have to worry about your safety or wonder if you belong. Many people take this for granted - being able to hear the music with a free mind. In queer spaces, dancers and punters can express themselves freely, sometimes for the first time, without worrying how the crowd will react around them.
PIONEERING
The queer community leads the way with dance floor etiquette, because it’s absolutely essential for us to ensure everyone feels safe and understands boundaries. With the many subcultures within the queer and LGBTQ+ community, it’s vital to cultivate a high level of respect and understanding of inclusivity. We dance in solidarity for each other.
