Why being a touring DJ is tough

Though it may look as though touring DJs are living the dream (which they are to an extent), being on the road has its pitfalls. It can be a lot tougher than you think, especially for those who aren’t quite in the “superstar DJ” bracket.

Constant touring is hard on the mind and body regardless of status. Low cost flights and hotels can exacerbate the difficulties that arise while travelling. Here are a few reasons why being a touring DJ is tough…

DISTURBED SLEEP CYCLE & JETLAG
DJing is largely a nocturnal activity. On top of moving between time zones, they’re often operating on a sleep deficit. Side effects of jetlag range from being simply drowsy, to affecting your bowels, urine production, digestion and blood pressure. Then there’s the constant temptation to join the party. Add in potential hangovers or comedowns and you can imagine the pressure on their mental health.

POOR DIET
Trying to maintain any kind of healthy diet while travelling is almost impossible. The shelves at most airport and train station outlets are full of low quality convenience food. A poor diet impacts your physical and mental health, which adds to the strain of travelling.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL STRESS
Flying from one country to another takes its toll on the body and mind. Doing several flights every weekend has even more impact, especially when you add in cancelled flights and delays. Fatigue, back ache, headaches, stress and anxiety are common by products of constant touring.

IT CAN BE VERY LONELY
Unless you’re part of a duo or trio or you’re able to travel with a tour manager or entourage, touring can be very lonely. Solo DJs often spend a lot of time on the road alone, only really experiencing social time when they’re in the club. Not to mention what’s known as post-performance depression. This can be triggered by going from the intense high of performing in front of a big crowd to being on your own in a hotel room.
