5 ways to deal with a comedown
Urgh, comedowns, the horrible “payoff” after a weekend of fun and excess. They’re never pretty and range in potency, from mild irritation to all out depressive thoughts.
Coping with a comedown can be tough, especially when you’re back in the slog of everyday life. Take heed of these tips and your comedown will be a little easier to deal with…
ACKNOWLEDGE AND ACCEPT IT
It’s all too easy to forget that a comedown is imminent. When it arrives you may be too preoccupied with your day-to-day to realise what’s happening. However, if you can stop and get some perspective, simply acknowledging and accepting the discomfort is a great start.
TAKE POSITIVE ACTION
Try not to wallow in the pain of a comedown, as it will make it worse. Face it head on with some light physical exercise, a comedy film, good food and seeing friends. Nutrition-wise, try eating food that has soy and sesame in it. Both contain L-Tyrosine, which the brain uses to make dopamine. Leafy greens are always a winner, too.
REPLENISH THE BODY WITH SLEEP
Your poor depleted body needs some love. Sleep is essential to bringing it back into harmony. Get lots of rest to give the body a chance to recuperate.
HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE
Two main causes of comedowns are lack of sleep and the toxins produced when ingesting substances. Flush the toxic gunk out with lots of water and replace the electrolytes you’ve lost with drinks such as coconut water.
RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO DO MORE
Hair of the dog, detox to retox blah blah, they might sound “cool” to some but you’ll do yourself a huge disservice to get back on it before you’ve had the time to properly recover.
